Cacao Bella™: Harnessing Cocoa Antioxidants to Support Type 2 Diabetes Management

Cacao Bella™ distinguishes itself in the chocolate market by offering a unique blend of indulgence and health benefits. Each serving contains 315 mg of cocoa polyphenols, a type of flavanol renowned for its potent antioxidant properties. These compounds have been shown to reduce inflammation, provide antioxidant benefits, and offer protection from UV radiation when consumed orally.

In addition to its high polyphenol content, Cacao Bella™ contains only 5 grams of sugar per serving, setting it apart from regular dark chocolates that often have higher sugar content. This lower sugar content makes it a more suitable option for those mindful of their sugar intake.

Research over the past decade supports a significant role for cocoa and its flavanols in the nutritional prevention of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Cocoa flavanols contribute to this by:

  • Regulating carbohydrate absorption in the gut.
  • Protecting pancreatic β-cells and enhancing insulin secretion.
  • Improving insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues such as the liver, adipose tissue, and skeletal muscle through the regulation of glucose transporters and key proteins in the insulin signaling pathway.
  • Exerting lipid-lowering effects.
  • Preventing the excessive oxidative stress and inflammation characteristic of T2D.

These effects collectively improve insulin sensitivity and help maintain normal blood glucose levels, potentially preventing or delaying the onset of T2D and its complications. Therefore, a moderate daily consumption of flavanols from cocoa or dark chocolate, along with an everyday intake of other dietary flavonoids, could be a valuable recommendation for the nutritional management of this disease.

However, it's important to note that many commercially available cocoa products or chocolates contain low amounts of flavanols and are rich in sugar and calories, which may worsen glycemic control in T2D patients. Therefore, choosing products like Cacao Bella™, which are rich in cocoa polyphenols and low in sugar, is essential.

While these findings are promising, further research, including well-designed human epidemiological and intervention studies, is needed to determine the optimal amount and variety of cocoa products that might be beneficial for preventing, delaying, or contributing to the treatment of T2D.
